Photos from Fractal Edge by Japanese artists MHAK and Oeil, a show which is currentlybeing exhibited at Compound Gallery in Portland.
MHAK and Oeil make up part of the posse of Japanese artists which i’m proud to have in this years No Comply. No doubt.
If your in Portland get down and check the show out.
MHAK
Born in Fukushima, 1981 and currently living in Tokyo, MHAKs graffiti inspired paintings with beautifully curved contours have caught the eye of American galleries and since his debut solo exhibition in April 2007 has been attracting world wide coverage for his unique and moving style.
He was commissioned to work on the adidal Originals exhibition in Dec 07 in Tokyo (did someone say Zero Tag?), featuring in the “Devil In Me” Music video by Japanese electronic group The Heavy Metal.
Oeil
Oeil Is currently at the graduate school of fine arts (master course) of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music and is an insanely prolific artist with a sharp line of style which can be seen in various places in central Tokyo.
I’ve just finished the second and 2008, No Comply Wood Grain Camo Design which will be the basis of this years visual representation of the exhibition.
Based on UK 4 Color, however remade with balanced brush strokes to do the patterns theme justice with organic detailing. The contrast, compared with last years will probably be a headache while I’m trying to place text over it, but i think its worth it.
Thanks to Kano who designed last years pattern, the plan is that Kano’s original wood grain concept will evolve into new designs with each progressive year, to parallel the evolution and growth of the No Comply Exhibitions themselves. Touch wood. (shit, i’m sorry about the pun).

No Comply 2008 will be at No Vacancy in QV. Melbourne’s newest, dopest and biggest arts space, huge enough to fit the 170 piece collection and also run by crew who have their head around the culture who will do show justice, which is the hardest thing to find.
We will also be constructing a third wall down the center of the room to increase the hanging space to over 80 meters.
No Comply will be on show for 3 weeks during November. Details about Sydney will be locked in soon.
