NAWLZ #6 ~ THE MASTER CHAMELEON

June 10th, 2008 by Koan

Issue #6 of NAWLZ is out.

For all you who are just tuning in, Nawlz is nothing less than an epic interactive online masterpiece by Australian artists Sutu.

Set in the indeterminably distant future, it loosely follows the life of a guy called Harley as he and his friends explore the limits of the psychedelic futurism surrounding them. With a insightful focus on the evolutionary merger of data interface design with tripped out individualized reality settings called a “Reals” and expressed with incredible interactive design, the Nawlz universe is an deep, epically beautifully world with a level of illustrative detail that would impress even Katsuhiro Otomo.

Japan

June 8th, 2008 by Karl

What up from Tokyo, Japan. It’s good to be back. Just dropping in for a quick g’day. Starting with this photo, fixed gear madness is in full swing. Everyone is riding a custom fixie, everyone. I’ve got loads of photos of some amazing custom jobs, they’re everywhere.

Burnt some cash in Harajuku, nothing has changed in 12 months. Neighborhood still has no stock (all L and XL bought by us Aussies no doubt), Supreme is run by a pack of grumpy assholes (rule #1 of shopping at Supreme, don’t be a white guy), and Visvim is still the pinnacle of Toyko (broke).

NiceProduce making waves in the land of the rising sun. More flicks coming soon, but why be on the computer when there’s so much food and beer to smash.

Ralph Bakshi Interview

June 7th, 2008 by Koan

“I knew that when kids started playing basketball in $250 sneakers that America was finished”

Found this interview with Ralph Bakshi where he talks about his career making a stand against meritocracy. And also his opinions on art. For me its encouraging, at a time when we see street artists merging with the established art scene there seems to be allot of tension as the academic artists reluctantly give space to the emerging field.

Its cool to hear the opinions of someone like Bakshi to remind us that despite the tension and the potential benefits from the cross over, in reality established scene can get fucked. While we might not have their audience and the money that they are throwing around, we do have creativity, art and a strong culture. Which for all the long winded explanations and theory behind every piece that they sell, it is the one thing they’ll never have and at the end of the day the only thing that matters.

As a testimony to this view, while other studios cashed in on garbage, Bakshi’s career includes greats such as Fritz the Cat, Wizards and Fire and Ice.

Check it here.
