DJ MAKO

I´ve been working on the 400ml mag, so I haven´t had much time to take care of other things…but I´ve been missing here so much…so I´ll give you a little preview of what I´ve been doing lately.

imgp1498sml

I recently went to meet my good old friend who turned into one of the best hip hop Djs that we have here in Brazil right now, producing with the best Mcs around and kicking ass on the beats.

So I went to check his performance at the  club Studio SP, that has arts all over the place, very cool stencil, stickers and graffiti artists decorated it and turned into a gallery night club, that always have awesome performances, like Dj Mako himself, and others.

12PCS GorKers first show of the year, kicking off another year of faithful service to the Melbourne art scene. Despite the heat wave the collection sucked them in from far and wide, fueled by 50 something slabs of Grolsh. Drunken shenanigans ensued.

Dorian Concept & Daedelus live after The Laneway Festival

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

OP_Dorian_v4

Now and then musical genius’ come by, and we always seem to get our grubby hands on them…

Dorian Concept – Micro Korg Master..

Dorian’s influences range from the modal-jazz of Coltrane, the later experiments of ann-arbor Resident Dabrye to the soundscapes of Oval. Dorian Concept is a twirk-noodle king, his on-the-fly improvs and quirky-key work-outs are altogether astounding with scattered drums, piercing synth laced hooks and jaw dropping bass. A self-taught pianist and somewhat of a Youtube star (his online tweaks get over 200000 hits) Dorian aka Oliver Johsnon recently had releases on labels like Kindred Spirits, Treble-O and R2 and has gotten support from the likes of Gilles Peterson and Benji B. He will rock out on the keyboard like no other during his show, the Austrian Scott Storch with more punch!

Daedelus – On a planet of his own..

Daedelus, the eccentric, electronic maestro of Ninja Tune is not your average cookie-cutter musician. One of LA’s most daring and prolific new artists, Daedelus chops and splices disparate acoustic sources into incredible works of contemporary resonance.

His trademark musicality contrasts IDM styled, left-field hip-hop cut-ups with samples from the 30s and 40s, the resulting style of honeyed melody and avant-electronics having no imitators. Daedelus’ reputation is long since established through collaborations with MF Doom, Madlib, Busdriver, Radioinactive, TTC, Mike Ladd and Taz from Sa-Ra, playing alongside Justice, DJ Assault and Two Live Crew and a guest appearance in Erykah Badu’s latest video.

The musician’s engaging live set brings much genuine dynamism to the sometimes static world of performed electronic/dance music.

Post Laneway Festival Musical Madness with support from Dave Pham, DJ Zaibatsu and JPS.

Ove-Naxx (real name Isao Sano) is a Japanese Breakcore/Raggacore artist from
Osaka, Japan. Often less serious than most Breakcore artists, Ove-Naxx is
one of the more eclectic Breakcore artists, as he fuses death metal, J-Pop,
Dancehall with samples of Latin American music and farmyard animals. He is
currently signed to Adaadat records, which is also home to fellow Japanese
electronic musicians DJ Scotch Egg (whom he has both callobrated and remixed
with).Ove-Naxx is currently releasing records on his accelmuzik label and
various labels.

Jean “Moebius” Giraud, Dune Character Designs.

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

In 1975, Alejandro Jodorowsky embarked on the adaptation of Frank Herbets Dune.

The film planned a cast which included, Salvidor Dali, Orson Wells and Mick Jager with a soundtrack by Pink Floyd, the film would have summarized the psychedelic creative spirit of the 70’s in a way which would of still been endearing today.

Unfortunately… due to lack of funding the film with its 14 hour epic script was canned. Luckily, at least the character and set design from the likes of Giger, Chris Foss and Moebius endure, to placate our need to imagine what the film would of be like while further lamenting its loss.

Here are some beautifully detailed and colored Dune character designs by the influential French comic book artist, Moebius which i think precede Peter Chung really nicely, particularly from Reign.

You can find out more about the Unseen Dune here.baron2medium_3031015482_d65216b3a4_omedium_3030178783_0b7c276e4e_omedium_3030210331_232a29ce4f_o

On a side note.. This is why popular culture sucks and why i need to stab people who listen to shit music and watch shit films, ultimately throughout history such people are individually responsible for funding going to mediocre commercial projects rather than enriching ones such as the Unseen Dune. Its a crime against humanity and it should be treated like one and I for one put my hand up to help administer the justice.

I used to tape this every time it came on Channel V when I was growing up. I once dropped it at ANYTIME and some chick came outta nowhere… “is that Buckshot LeFonque!”… then ran off. Never got to catch up and yarn about these cats.

RIP Richard Wright. Shine on, brother.

Pink Floyd member Richard Wright dies at age 65

LONDON (AP) — Richard Wright, a founding member of the rock group Pink Floyd, died Monday. He was 65.

Pink Floyd’s spokesman, Doug Wright, who is not related to the artist, said Wright died after a battle with cancer at his home in Britain. He says the band member’s family did not want to give more details about his death.

Wright met Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and Nick Mason in college and joined their early band, Sigma 6. Along with the late Syd Barrett, the four formed Pink Floyd in 1965.

I remember being in London in 2006. I arrived in the morning direct from NYC, to find Syd Barrett had passed on. Good mourning London. I spent the first few days sitting in a garden in Westbourne Park going through the earlier Pink Floyd discography, I still have the headline.

Now another sad wake up message in 2008, my heros are slowly finding their way to that great gig in the sky.

Shine on Richard Wright. An inspiration and a legend. We will miss you.

Peace.
