PHIBS @ CHINA HEIGHTS ~ FRIDAY 5TH SEPT

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Melbourneʼs esteemed quality of graffiti and street art can be tracked to the influence and tutelage of one prolific artist. Phibs. Initially raised in county New South Wales before moving to the city of Sydney, Phibs relocated to Melbourne due to its strong support in the local arts community and the increased opportunities for emerging artists.

Originating from a traditional graffiti background, Phibs endeavors to promote the value of the art-form through outlets such as ommissioned murals, youth workshops, exhibitions, and theatrical productions. His remarkably detailed murals can be seen around the inner city suburbs of Fitzroy and Collingwood as well as throughout the city itself.

Whilst Phibsʼ signature is his intricate, almost stencil-like, delineated lines and ʻcut-backʼ methods, his work is visibly influenced by the art nd mythology of many cultures, both ancient and modern. Highly regarded amongst his peers, he continues to exhibit in elbourne and interstate galleries, and has been represented at numerous festivals throughout the country.

Phibs has another show in the works that will be launching on Friday 5th of September down at China Heights in Sydney. Check the flyer, remember the date, more news soon.

Fresh?

I’ve done a little research, got the official koan magnifying glass out, super sleuthed and…. it turns out that this isn’t a brilliantly produced piss take by a think tank of comedy masterminds at the apogee of thier creative genius. No,  this is infact SERIOUS, its all 100% genuine, from the beat boxing soundtrack to the phrase “graffiti revolution” and then all the way to the “FRESHHHHHH freshhhhhh freshhhhh” part at the end, all real.

BCONE

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

In the past i’ve always put B-Boying in the boot next to the spare tyre on the cultural road trip, being put off by wak demonstrations at piss poor hip hop events. I mean its cool, but it’s never really registered as innovative for me.

THAT IS UNTIL… All this changed when i caught up with Mason, who along with a huge list of other achievements has, in the past 5 years become without contest the man of bboy documentation world wide with his Seven Shadows series.

What i realized, my assumption that B-Boys we all about the classic moves is the equivalent of thinking that graffiti is all about classic letter form, very wrong.

In truth, B-Boy’s today are pushing boundaries in ways you literally couldn’t imagine, defying the mechanics of the human body and expressing a style more akin to Mortal Combat than the classic breakers circle’s that sit in most our minds.

The 7 top breakers landed in Melbs today as part of the Red Bull BC ONE tour and will be holding demonstrations around Melbs.redbullbconeexhibitiontour_melbourne.JPG

Its worth heading down to at least one of these events. I’d recommend the espy show on Friday, cause i cant see how St Jeromes is going to work in that small space with the uneven floor and Boutique will be chock full of the very last of the metro’s bugging the DJ for sneaky sound system and stinking up the place with flouro t-shirts.

That said, I’ll probably be at all of them.

INSANE ! What else could you call it ?!

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

I´ve been working a lot, trying to keep up with everything that´s going on, working on a few posts, but I just saw some photos from one of my ultimate favorite artists here in Brazil that I just got to show you, a guy from Jundiai/SP, known as Insane. Not without a reason !

A wall…

insane

…an insane wall !!! Much much better, for my taste!

His style is unique and his technique is pure talent, amazes me everytime I see a new wall, a new sketch or any drawing form this guy.

Keep the insanity positive!
