Cyanide poisoning and explosives are used to catch coral reef saltwater fish and live coral for the hobbyist, marine pet trade across many parts of the world. Leaving reef wastelands and causing destruction to the natural habitat of the coral reef. Most, if not all, saltwater fish sold in aquariums are live caught from the wild. Live rock, created by centuries of coral polyps, is also chipped from reefs in the wild.

‘These are the Days’ By Leah Bartholomew @ Gorker Gallery

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Opening Night Thursday 17 June, 6:30pm – 8:30pm

Following the success of her debut solo exhibition Where the Dry Leaves Fall at Gorker Gallery in 2008, Leah Bartholomew presents her new body of work These are the Days in her second solo exhibition.

These are the Days is an intimate exploration of the small, special moments that binds us together in friendship and create a sense of place. The prints, collages and paper sculptures delicately handcrafted by Bartholomew tell the story of a protracted coming of age, anchored in the landscapes of both experience and imagination.

From poetic scenes such as the group of friends lazing in a sun-drenched field, to the bonding of the shared beer in city back streets, to the quiet moment of solitude amongst prismatic trees, these works honour the events and emotions that can seem almost insignificant at the time, but go on to become important memories and dreams. They convey a similar feeling to that of discovering the smell of bonfire smoke on a pair of jeans that you haven’t worn for weeks.

Nostalgic. Ethereal. Personal. Precious.

Exhibition runs until Sunday 27 June
Gorker Gallery – Cnr Gore & Kerr Street Fitzroy
Opening hours:
3pm – 7pm Wednesday – Friday
11am – 7pm Saturday & Sunday
Wine Tasting Wednesday 23 June, 6pm – 7pm
